At the September meeting I will present a PowerPoint presentation illustrating how you can determine the order (referred to as Precedence) that you should display your awards (ribbons) on your uniform so that your ribbons are worn in the proper order. The presentation is available via this link. This presentation will display in a new window. When you are through viewing the presentation close the window. If you have any questions, forward them to me at [email protected].

Boating Accident Statistics Just Released for 2008
The USCG Boating Safety Division just released the comprehensive analysis of boating statistics for 2008. During 2008, the Coast Guard recorded 709 deaths, 3,331 injuries and approximately $54 million in damage to property, stemming from 4,789 recreational boating accidents. This represents an increase in the fatality rate (a measure of the number of deaths against the number of registered recreational boats) from 5.3 in 2007 to 5.6 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational boats in 2008.

About Boating Safely – Second Edition
About Boating Safely -Second Edition The Second Edition of About Boating Safely is just off the press and soon to be shipped. The changes to the textbook are subtle; therefore, PowerPoints, Instructor Notes and the Test will remain the same as posted for the first edition. Many of the changes are reflected in upgraded graphics. Text changes are included to keep current with National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) Standards, which have recently changed. Flotillas may continue to use the first Edition of About Boating Safely until the supply is depleted. Furthermore, a Flotilla may use both the first and second edition in the same class with no disruption to the instruction. A complete Cross-Reference of every change has been posted to the e-library at: http://www.cgauxed.org/elib/courses/abs.htm

Unique Web Site Launched to Promote Recreational Boating Safety
The National Auxiliary Boating Department has launched a new website called the Auxiliary B Department Wiki. The site is based on wiki software, which allows users to contribute their ideas for promoting RBS without being experts in building web pages. At this stage of development, the site has focused initially on implementation of the new agreement with the Boy Scouts of America, as well as resources available to the Auxiliary’s liaison efforts with States, in order to encourage force multiplication of RBS assets. Members of the Boating, Education, Vessel Exams and Public Affairs Departments are working with Auxiliarists with Scouting experience to promote proven “best practices” that can be reproduced locally. Members with experience working with outside organizations in the RBS realm are encouraged to contribute their ideas. The site and instructions on how to get involved are at http://auxbdeptwiki.cgaux.org, and the link is also on the Boating Department web site.

AUX eNews maintains online archives of all past issues. Members of Coast Guard Forces listed in AUXDATA may click: http://auxpa.org/weblog/blogs/blog6.php
You can now follow us on Twitter at @CGAUXDrumPoint.
The new website was created with these things in mind:
1. We needed a convenient content system that many individuals responsible for communicating with members could add and edit information. The older site was a static model that required someone to learn a complicated and out dated web editing tool. Using WordPress as a content tool, FSO’s can create and edit their own pages and do it at their convenience. Using the new site is an effort to work smarter and not harder.
2. The flotilla could benefit from an on-line calendar. In the right hand column you will see an events calendar that members can refer to. The FSO-MT and FSO-PA can also update these entries as they receive them so announcements of important events can be made quickly.
3. My impressions were that we needed a blog roll of our own with links that our flotilla members could benefit from. The blog roll or link list is a work in progress and can be updated by the FSO-CS or anyone else trained as an administrator. I would like to have another administrator working with me once the basic site is complete.
4. Using a domain of our own we now have an on-line brand associated with our flotilla name. We also have email available for every officer and member. I would like to start by creating accounts for officers and then members. Send me your email username and a desired password so that I can create the accounts. The email can be checked using a browser. In these email accounts you have a calendar and the ability to see if others in the same domain are logged on. The other benefit is that members with staff responsibility can provide the DrumPoint.org email addresses to the world instead of their private email addresses and it builds on our identity. Anytime you want to refer anyone for any reason to us and what we do you can now tell them to go to drumpoint.org. Simple, short, identifiable.
Some of the links and pages on the site are still broken and not yet developed. I’m open to input. If you are an FSO and have regular content for members we can create an account for you at the site and you can begin immediately to build your pages.

During the start of the 2009 boating season the Drum Point Flotilla held marine hand-held flare demonstrations for the general public. The West Marine store in Solomons, Maryland provided space in their parking lot for Auxliarists to demonstrate the proper use of flares.
Members of the public had an opportunity to actually use a flare, many for the very fist time. Some of the visitors to the demonstration had been boating for many years and had never used a flare.
