Boating Safety Tip of the Day
Know the Weather

What weather do you expect to encounter during your journey? Are you prepared for that weather? Do you have the necessary skills to make good decisions in bad weather? Think before you sink.

Join the Flotilla!

Join us! Use the contact link above to send your name and telephone number to the Flotilla officer responsible for Personnel Services. You must be at least seventeen years old and a United States citizen. You must pass a Personal Security Investigation after successfully completing a New Member test based on the study guide described on this page.

Please visit the official Coast Guard Auxiliary website to learn more about the Auxiliary. This link to the Auxiliary  Join page is a great place to get started.

When you make the decision to come aboard the next steps are:

1. A reading assignment and your first written test on the history and responsibilities of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. You read about who we are, our history, how the organization accomplishes its many duties and so on.

2. Fingerprinting and associated PSI security application with security questions. Your fingerprints are submitted to federal law enforcement as part of the background check.

3. Your photo is taken for an Auxiliary ID card.

These steps usually involve about a two to three hour visit with our Flotilla Personnel Services Officer.

Membership dues are $30 per year. Dues fund the various flotilla activities we enjoy doing with each other as part of our fellowship.

You may begin attending meetings right away! Once your security check is returned with an approval your status in the Auxiliary is “Initially Qualified.”  Next you are required to take the Boating Safety and Seamanship course (or have already taken it) to become “Basically Qualified.”  Once you are Basically Qualified you are eligible to train in the Boat Crew and other programs of the Auxiliary.

Why not get a head start and read the New Member Course Study Guide (pdf file). Your New Member Test is based on this short document.

Our neighboring  flotilla in Annapolis (23-1)  has a great web page describing who we are and what we do. It is very much worth a read! You will discover that when you join you will have friends in many flotillas. The Annapolis folks do some exciting things every year and our members take an active part.

Flotilla 23-5 in Alexandria has an excellent New Members Course Study Guide page with links to everything you might need.
